Disassembly and reassembly are possible but involve some risk of damage, so we strongly discourage it. Conventions Used in this Document ?Long press? means to press and hold a button, and ?press? means to quickly press a button. Preparing the Reader Before First-Time Use? Find the Normal Operating Position 1. Place the Reader in front of you with the flat side (visual display screen) facing up toward the ceiling. 2. Have the flat skinny end (called the "power end") toward you and the thicker end (called the "camera battery and card slot end") pointed away from you. This will be called the "normal operating position." Charge the Reader Plug the Reader into an external power as soon as you receive it and whenever you are not using it. The charger consists of a small rectangular box with a cable. You will find the charger under a false floor in the carrying bag. 1. Plug the small rectangular box with two flat prongs into the wall outlet. 2. With the Reader in normal operating position, insert the round connecter of the power cord into the small hole on the right edge of the power end so when the cord is plugged in it is pointing out to the right. 3. Charge the Reader for at least one hour before using. Keep in mind that it takes approximately two hours to fully charge the Reader. Locating the Reader Control Buttons? The Reader control panel is on the top flat side of the Reader, just below the screen when the Reader is in normal operating position. The configuration of the buttons on the panel is as follows: 1. At the center there is a rectangular box with raised edges and an additional button inside. This is the Arrow box. The Left and Right Arrows are the left and right edges of the box, Up Arrow is the top edge, Down Arrow is the bottom edge, and the Enter button is in the center of the Arrow box. The Enter button is also used for starting and stopping reading. 2. Outside the Arrow box, in the upper-left side is the F1button. 3. F2 is the button located on the upper right side of the Arrow box. 4. The F3 button is located on the lower left side of the Arrow box below F1. 5. The F4 button is located on the lower right side of the Arrow box below F2. Using the Reader for First-Time? 1. Accept the Licensing Agreement by pressing F1 to activate the Reader, then F2 to accept the Agreement. 2. Set date and time by pressing F2 to go to User Settings, and Down Arrow to go to ?Set date and time.? Use Right and Left Arrows to move through date and time selections, and press Up and Down Arrows to set the correct date and time. Press Enter to save selections. It is important to set the Reader on the accurate date time since saved files are automatically named by date. Switching the Reader Off and On? Turn the Reader off by long pressing (pressing and holding) F4, followed by pressing F4 again. The Reader will confirm shutdown with "Good-bye." Try this shutdown procedure after you have accepted the licensing agreement and set date and time. Turn the Reader on by pressing F1, pausing, then pressing F2. The Reader will respond, "The system is in Shooting Mode. Camera is off. I am ready." You may not hear this response if you press F1 and F2 too quickly. In addition, the system starts in the same mode in which it was left (Document Reader, User Setting, or Shooting Mode). Therefore, the initial message you hear may differ depending on the previously accessed mode. Shooting Pictures and Reading? After the Reader is turned on, you can use it as a simple point-shoot-and-listen system. Use the following basic procedures to jump right in and give the Reader a try: 1. Turn the camera on after switching the Reader on. The camera is the rectangular box that points down toward the table or desk when the Reader is in normal operating position. The camera "on-off" button located on the left side of the camera. It is a small, flat button flush to the surrounding surface and slightly rough to the touch. It is not the large, round, and smooth button, which you will probably identify first. To turn the camera on, press and hold this small button until you hear two chimes, then release it. After a short pause the Reader will say, "Camera is on." Use this same button to turn the camera off whenever you are not taking pictures. 2. Put the Reader in Shooting Mode by pressing F2 until the Reader confirms this selection. 3. Position the Reader by holding it centered and level about 16 inches above or away from the target document and making sure that the surrounding area is clear. 4. Press Up Arrow to hear an optional Field of View Report, so you can get an idea of how accurately you are aiming the camera before snapping the picture. For best results it is ideal, but not essential, for the Field of View Report to say, "Portrait Orientation (or Landscape Orientation). All four edges are visible. Seventy percent filled." To see the optional View Finder image on the display screen, you can press F3. 5. Shoot a picture by pressing the Down Arrow, and continuing to hold the Reader steady and level above the target until you hear the camera snap the picture. The Reader can then be placed on the desk or table while the image is processed automatically. You should begin to hear the text in about 30 seconds after the snap. To pause the speech at any point or to resume reading, press Enter. 6. Turn the Reader Off by long pressing F4, then pressing it again. The Reader says, "Good-bye." 7. Remember to keep the Reader charged. Plug the Reader into an external power source whenever you are not using it to prevent a system failure caused by loss of power. To learn how to maintain and replace the camera battery, consult the User Guide. Getting Further Instructions?
